Despite its potential, lighting is notably absent from recent key EU strategies, such as the Clean Industrial Deal and the Action Plan for Affordable Energy. It also risks being overlooked in upcoming legislative proposals.

A recent statement from LightingEurope raises awareness of this omission and highlighting the dual strategic role of the energy efficiency industrial ecosystem, including the lighting sector, in driving the EU’s sustainable growth. This includes not only fostering job creation, research and manufacturing within Europe, but also providing readily-available technologies that reduce energy costs, lower emissions and bolster energy security.

The statement also outlines critical policy recommendations to fully leverage the potential of lighting, including the clear political recognition of lighting as a key technology for the green transition, simplifying and clarifying Ecodesign and labelling rules for lighting, ensuring ambitious national implementation of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), or ensuring the effective enforcement of EU rules.
