EPREL, public launch and strategy on verification of suppliers

In the meeting of 31/3, it was communicated that a “beta” version of the public EPREL website was available from end of March, where only models registered by “digitally verified” suppliers were visible. So far, no major announcement/publicity has been done; the Commission is awaiting that a reasonable share of registered models (over 1 300 000 in total in the database) could become visible. Unfortunately, although some suppliers managed to swiftly obtain an electronic seal, even within the very first days from availability of the verification software in EPREL, a vast majority of models remain not visible because they are registered by suppliers that are either struggling to obtain the correct verification product by the providers they selected, or they have not yet started the process to request a seal. As a result, a share of between 40% (commercial refrigeration products) and 15% (lighting, domestic refrigeration, displays, etc.) of models is currently visible in a search from the public website.

In the context of the announcement of the REPowerEU initiative, DG ENERGY now considers it timely and necessary to publicly announce the availability of EPREL as a repository where the most energy efficient products can be found, thus contributing to a reduction of energy use and imports. Consequently, to provide a more complete access to the database content, all models placed on the market by end of March, whether from verified suppliers or not, will be made visible with a  new version planned for 16 May, while models from still unverified suppliers will temporarily appear with a banner indicating: “This model is from a supplier that has not been verified yet”. Actions are meanwhile being considered to boost the verification process, including further transitional arrangements. An implementing act will be discussed in a future meeting, including the operational details for the verification and a timeline.
